Polymathematical

An article in Wired “From Crypto to Jazz” explores the connection between music and math through the music of saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa. Read the article and listen to the music samples. Very cool.

Fittingly, the author Alexander Gelfand, is as much of a polymath as I have ever met. His interest in connecting science and art is borne through in the excellent writing. I hope to see many more such articles from Alex in the future.

The Code Book

And if you haven’t already read it, I highly recommend reading Simon Singh’s Code Book which inspired the music. I would place it in the top 10 general non-fiction books I have ever read. And that is saying a lot (much to the disappointment of Fishbooks who wishes I would read more fiction). It has stories about spies, decoding of wartime communications, and sticking it to the man. How can you go wrong?
